The leader of the DPRK, Kim Jong Il, personally directed the production of the opera "Eugene Onegin" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, created by teachers and students of the Pyongyang Kim Won Gyung Conservatory. It clarifies the agency, Kim Jong Il volunteered to lead the process of staging "Eugene Onegin" as soon as he learned about the work on the opera at the Pyongyang Conservatory. After attending rehearsals, the North Korean leader was satisfied with the work of the troupe, praising the professionalism of the artists and their enthusiasm.

Kim Jong Il also expressed satisfaction that the young North Korean students are able to deliver any foreign opera. At the same time, he stressed that North Korea, "known to the whole world by five revolutionary operas," should get closer acquainted with world culture.
