How to learn psychology?
Psychology (literally “the word about the soul”) is the science of the psyche. Probably, no profession has acquired such a large number of myths and amateurs who consider themselves particularly successful in this field. To get rid of the prejudices about this science, as well as to choose an area of psychology that is interesting to you, in which you may want to go deeper, read this article.
Psychology as a science
Psychology was separated in its time from philosophy, and before that it developed as part of it. Scientists have created a variety of theories explaining psychological phenomena. Some of them have been confirmed over time, others have lost their relevance.
Modern psychology is an independent area of knowledge, an experimental and highly branched science that explores the psyche of humans and animals.
Branches of psychology
Psychology is divided into two main parts:
- fundamental (general) psychology.
- applied psychology.
In turn, the fundamental psychology is divided into the psychology of cognitive processes and the psychology of personality, but the applied field of science contains almost as many industries as there are spheres of human life, these are the main ones:
- differential psychology;
- age-related psychology;
- pedagogical psychology;
- experimental psychology;
- medical psychology;
- genetic psychology;
- social Psychology;
- legal psychology;
- labor psychology;
And this is not a complete list. All branches of applied psychology have their own subject of study, while being interconnected.
How to learn psychology: choose a subject
If you plan to engage in psychology at a professional level, go to a good university, if you want to expand your circle of knowledge, determine the subject you are most interested in.
For example, many are interested in the psychology of relationships, and this is part of social psychology. Psychology of influence and conflictology (parts of labor psychology) may be helpful to leaders. Young mothers would be well acquainted with the basics of educational and age psychology. But coaching and all sorts of trainings are newfangled activities based on psychotherapy; some of its elements (very curtailed, and therefore ineffective) are used by pick up artists - young people who are acquainted with girls.
How to pick up the literature
Taking advantage of the special interest of people in psychology, there are those who want to pass such pseudoscience and beliefs as astrology or reincarnation, etc., into its parts. The controversy surrounding this topic does not subside, but so far officially neither the one nor the other has anything to do with the science of psychology.
As you study the question you are interested in, try not to use sources like women's magazines or popular books. Better read these luminaries like Z. Freud, C. Jung, E. Bern, R. S. Nemov, D. B. Elkonin, L. S. Vygotsky, and others.
